Beyonce’s Pregnancy

Although I have heard of plenty of media hoaxes, I have never used or knew what the word hoax meant. After our class discussion, I was comfortable with the term and ready to search the web. While looking through the top ten and the “worst” media hoaxes I didn’t find any that interest me and some were the same we either discussed in class or I had already heard before. After looking at countless articles of different media hoaxes, an article about Beyonce’s pregnancy came up. After Beyonce’ announced her pregnancy after her performance at the VMA’s in 2011, people were not as receptive to motherhood as I thought they would be. Usually pregnancies are glorified in Hollywood and people are obsessed with the “baby bump”. Unlike other celebrities who announce their pregnancies, people didn’t believe Beyonce’ was really pregnant when her stomach folded after sitting down to do an interview with an Australian talk show.

After these allegations the public continued to scrutinized Beyonce. After Blue Ivy was born, (Beyonce’s daughter) there was only one picture.

After this picture flooded the internet the media wasted no time and said the baby looked fake and that it wasn’t really her child. To add insult to injury, Beyonce would never show her baby when they were in public so in my opinion the media took that and ran with it.

Beyonce then made a documentary called “Life is But a Dream” that followed her throughout her pregnancy. It not only featured the birth of Blue Ivy but it also featured a scene where they showed the baby actually moving in her stomach. Even after the baby was born and the evidence was clearly there, that didn’t stop the media from continuing what the believed was fake. Although there was now proof that she gave birth to a child, the scrutiny continued with accusations of a surrogate mother. Beyonce spoke out about this saying, “To think I would be that vain – I respect mothers and women so much and to be able to experience bringing a child into this world, if you’re lucky and fortunate enough to experience that, I would never, ever take that for granted. It’s the most powerful thing you can do. Especially after losing a child, the pain and trauma from that just makes it mean so much more to get an opportunity to bring life into the world. It seems like people should have boundaries.” Now that little Blue Ivy is a little older and she is a spitting image of both her mother and father, the media has given Beyonce a rest.
