Vero is the latest social media platform that has taken the world by storm. The image-sharing app launched in 2015, and since then it has skyrocketed up the social media popularity ladder with nearly three million downloads.

Vero’s surge in popularity may be attributed users who were frustrated with Instagram’s

In the platforms manifesto, it claims to offer a more “authentic” experience compared to its counterparts

One of the major differences that I found is that it’s only free to the first one million users. Users who sign up after will be charged a small fee for a yearly subscription. On the company’s website, they state that:

“Our subscription model will allow us to keep Vero advertising-free, and to focus solely on delivering the best social experience instead of trying to find new ways to monetize our users’ behavior or tricking them back into the app with notifications.”

Personally, I think that this business model has its flaws. Since the platform will be advertising free I believe this will greatly hinder their growth. Compared to their counterparts who are not advertising free they have had exponential growth, How? Through their advertising services, they have been able to secure the funds to grow. Unless Vero receives funding from investors that will allow the company to grow.

Ultimately I think that people will be hesitant in paying a subscription fee to be active on the platform. I like what they are about, but I think the business model needs work if they want to continue to grow.

  1. I have never heard of this app before, which is interesting because you said the app launched in 2015. I decided to go on the website and check out what it is about. From a glance the layout and the colors of the app are really nice. When looking on the App Store it appears as if the reviews are VERY mixed.

  2. This Application looks extremely interesting and eye catching. I do agree with you, in order to use the application you need to pay a small fee, something that will make a user hesitant. I would like less advertisements, but its an annoying feature that I sometimes like. Overall I think Vero should take a risk and make it free like Instagram, maybe they will be the new social media outlet?

  3. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have users pay a fee. Especially if the first one million users don’t have to pay. It’s kind of unfair. Also, this came out in 2015 and it’s 2018 now. It’s been 3 years and this is the first I’m hearing of this app. That makes me hesitant to think that it’s going to become popular like Facebook or Instagram.

  4. I actually heard really bad reviews about this app. I guess the people who made it were apart of the Russian Government or something and they were spying on people through it. I also heard you can’t delete your profile once you make it and they can get to all your personal information through the app. Sounded a little sketchy to me.

  5. I’ve never heard of this app before but again I’m always behind on what’s “new.” It looks and the desgin is nice. I don’t like that after 1.million users have signed up they have to begin paying. To me that doesn’t make sense and it makes me think it would draw people away from the app. I’m always wondering if this app is popular and with what generation. Who uses it and for what?
