For this research Paper I have decided to inculde interviews from both my parents, brother and best friend in order to obtain some of their takes on industry city. Here is how it went.

Here are the series of questions:

Parents Interview:

Taide- Why did you settle in Sunset Park Brooklyn?

Mom- It was a place where many immigrants arrived. I was undocumented. I was desperate for a job. I needed money and I knew that factories would hire me. I saw opportunity.

Dad- I was living in California, then I migrated to Las Vegas, they I settled in NYC since your uncle was already settled here.I wanted to go to school since i was so young. But I wasn’t allowed to. Instead I had to work three jobs. I was a busboy, a boxer and a chef. Later on I moved to a factory where I met your mother. I was the Manager.

Taide-How long have you both been living in Sunset Park?

Mom-20 years, It has allowed me to grow and work. All I want is a better future, for all my kids. I want you to be successful since I couldn’t be. I wanted to go to college, but instead I had to be a mother and fend for my own. Sunset Park wasn’t the best place to be, too much drama and gang fights but it was a great place to find jobs.

Dad-23 years,It has been very hard but I am happy to know that I have always had a job. Sunset park use to be very bad, I was once chased by the puerto ricans because I was Mexican the thought I was affiliated with their rival gang. I was simply a hard worker who didn’t have time for nonsense.

Taide-Describe Sunset Park then and now?

Mom-Sunset park has always been dominated by the Latinos, at least when I arrived here. Music always blasting. You heard bachata, reggaeton, banda, cumbia. It was a clash of music. It was super dangerous. Now you see a lot of “gringos”. They are making everything expensive, and industry city

Dad– Sunset park was horrible. I always had to run home. Hearing gunshots, and police sirens everyday. It was non-stop war between the Mexican and the Puerto Ricans. We hated each other. Now it has become very calm. There is more police. I see more white and young people. They are taking over. Everything is expensive. I see a class divide and it’s scary to know we will have to leave because we won’t fit in anymore. I don’t care if white people are here just don’t disrespect the original tenants.

Taide- What do you think of Industry City?

Mom- Your brother took me and I actually felt out of place. This was not here years ago, it was a run down abandoned warehouse where homeless people would spend the night. Now it looks like chelsea Market in NYC. It is very pretty but it does not seem to match the people who live in Sunset Park.
Dad- It is very Pretty, I find it funny that they are trying to sell a $15 dollar avocado sandwhich at the avocaderia spot, that absurd on 5th ave its like $5 and its made by a Mother so you know it’s good. Brooklyn is becoming to expensive and this new invention is about to kick us out!

Brothers Interview

Taide- Have you noticed a change in Sunset Park

Anthony- Yeah, so many white people. They are kind of rude. There is a lot of college students on our block. All they do is smoke weed and no one tells them anything. It is kind of unfair. If my friends were to smoke I am sure they will get in trouble because they are hispanic.

Taide- Do you feel safer now?

Anthony-Yes and no. A lot of gang violence has stopped, but it’s still kind of dangerous. If you don’t mess with anyone then they won’t mess with you. The white people stick together. The block feels different. Less noise but I don’t care. It’s happening to every neighborhood and we can’t do anything about it.

Taide- Do you know what gentrification is?

Anthony- When everything gets whitewashed , things become expensive and they kick poor people out.

Taide- How do you like Industry City?

Anthony– I actually think its really cool. I took mom and dad the other day, they were not fans because everything was expensive but I enjoyed it. It’s a cool place to hang out, i’m sure you and your college friend would have a blast.

Taide- Have you noticed any changes occuring in Sunset Park?

Nereida- Girl there has been so many, starting with Bush terminal, the NYU Hospital, Nets Work out gym and Industry city. It’s all changing so fast, we even have more college students and graduates.

Taide- What do you think of Industry City?

Nereida- Industry city is really fun actually, we need to go there. I know many are not a fan because of the tenant displacement that is occurring and the reasons why the built Industry city in the first place. I am kind of torn because I understand what they are trying to do but I don’t know if they realize how bad they are affecting the rest of Sunset Park.

Nereida liked Industry City because it made her feel as if she was in NYC. She likes that it gives students something to do in Sunset Park. She is torn between supporting industry city or hating it. She is aware of the gentrifying trends Industry is brining but is also liking the new things to do.
